Redefining Luxury as Interior Trend - Designers share their vision on 'the new luxury.'

As the fifth edition of the Independent Hotel Show Amsterdam approaches, we asked several designers to share their insights on the central theme of this boutique event: Redefining Luxury.

REDEFINING LUXURY AS INTERIOR TRENDThe origin of the details

"The attention to detail and its origins represent ‘Redefined Luxury’ for me," says Elise Luttik, who designed the Hotel Innovation Stage for this year’s Independent Hotel Show. “The details of the interior were my starting point in the design approach. Where one might typically work with existing patterns and motifs, these were specially created for this project. Despite being digitally crafted, the patterns were developed through artisanal or analogue steps, resulting in unique and dynamic prints. The foundation for these ‘digital brushstrokes’ comes from nature. To me, being surrounded by nature is the ultimate luxury, and I wanted to subtly reflect this in the patterns of my interior design.”

A New Vision

Niek Sanders of Robuust Amsterdam designed the Hotel Business Stage for this year’s edition. “As young designers, we have a new vision when it comes to luxury. For us, it’s about creating spaces that are not only aesthetically appealing but also functional and sustainable. In the Hotel Business Stage, we have brought this vision to life by designing an environment that encourages inspiration and knowledge-sharing about the future of hospitality. By using simple geometric shapes and as many circular materials as possible, we strive for a timeless look that aligns with a modern lifestyle. Our designs are characterised by a minimalist Hotel Business Stage Design 1aesthetic with natural colours, where functionality goes hand in hand with design and comfort. We take a modular approach to our product design, making our creations multifunctional and adaptable. This provides flexibility in use and perfectly suits the evolving needs of the hospitality sector.”

Recycling or Refurbishing

"We work extensively with steel, a material that is not only long-lasting but also highly recyclable. Our products are designed to be either recycled or refurbished, contributing to a circular approach. All our designs are created in Amsterdam and are largely produced locally in the Netherlands. This approach not only ensures high quality but also strengthens our commitment to sustainable and local production. We see an integration of minimalism and sustainability. Hotels are opting for interiors that are not only visually appealing but also contribute to a conscious and sustainable lifestyle. At Robuust Amsterdam, we apply this by creating timeless designs with a focus on quality and durability, ensuring that you can enjoy your interior for a lifetime.”

No longer static

"Luxe is no longer static, but a total experience where technology and design merge," says Jordy Slob of dEP de Sfeerontwerpers, one of the design companies exhibiting at the Independent Hotel Show. "Everything revolves around the experience. For Hotel Hotel Business Stage Design 2Blendin in Bloemendaal, for example, we created a lighting and sound installation that perfectly complements the atmosphere and functionality of the space. New generations of guests expect more than just comfort; they seek an experience. With our integration of light and sound, we elevate the ambiance of Blendin to the next level. The dynamic lighting changes with the time of day. During the day, it creates a fresh, open look, while in the evening, warm tones provide an intimate and inviting atmosphere. The custom-designed sound system offers a high-quality, seamlessly integrated background experience. From an energetic start in the morning to a relaxing lounge experience in the evening – everything is effortlessly tailored to the desired mood."

Design is one of the most important pillars of the Independent Hotel Show Amsterdam. The boutique event brings designers and hotel managers together for two days. Design trends are discussed during seminars by, among others, Paul Linse (studio Linse), Sontaya Bluangtook (UN Studios), and Maarten Hooijmeijer (Inbo). BNI organizes a Power Breakfast on the second day about the future of Phone-free spaces.
